The holiday season in Reno begins when mayor Bob Cashell and council members light the tree at the downtown plaza/skating rink at about 5:15 p.m. on Nov. 23. Before the tree lighting, Billinghurst Middle School students will sing carols. Professional skaters will take to the ice from 5:15 to 5:30 p.m. After their performance the rink will be open to the public until 9.
Reno Pops Concert and Sparks Events Keep Season Exciting
On Friday, December 3 at 7:30 p.m. the Reno Pops Orchestra presents its fourth annual holiday concert at the Rock Church in Sparks. The holiday music on the program ranges from White Christmas and Winter Wonderland to Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring and Corelli’s Christmas Concerto. A vocal ensemble will also perform and in keeping with the concerts’ tradition, the audience will be included in a sing-along of familiar carols.
The Sparks tree lighting ceremony is scheduled from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 3 in front of the St. Mary's Amphitheater, located at 10th Street and Victorian Avenue. The 23rd annual Sparks Hometowne Christmas Parade is scheduled for the next day at 1 p.m.on Victorian Avenue. The parade, one of the area’s most colorful, lasts about two hours.
Also on December 4, it will be Christmas story time from noon to 1 p.m. at the Sparks Heritage Museum on Victorian Square. Later in the afternoon Santa and Mrs. Claus will greet and visit with children in the historic Glendale Schoolhouse (noon- 2 p.m. and 3 - 4 p.m.). Both events are free.
A Tuba Quartet and Reno Philharmonic Make Holiday Music
For more unusual sounds of the holidays, there will be a tuba concert at Wilbur D. May Museum in Reno on December 5 at 3 p.m.. The performance will feature Christmas carols arranged in four part harmony to be played by tubas, baritones, and euphoniums.
Usually a sell-out, Reno Philharmonic Orchestra’s annual Spirit of the Season, with performances on both December 4 and 5 ,features choirs, musicians, dancers, and other entertainment. Pioneer Theatre for the Performing Arts is venue for the production.
